Web Application for Hospital Pharmacies

About the Project

About the Client

Mesalvo, a leading German provider of Hospital Information Systems (HIS), sought support in modernizing its pharmacy module – and in adapting it to new infrastructural and regulatory requirements.

Project Overview

We supported our client in migrating their hospital pharmacy application to a cloud architecture. The modernized software had to be fully integrated into the Telematics Infrastructure (TI) and compliant with the German KBV certification standards.

Regulation

With the introduction of e-prescription regulations in Germany in 2022, many software providers for medical facilities faced the challenge of integrating their systems into the Telematics Infrastructure. HIS systems based on outdated technologies were particularly affected, as they met neither the performance nor the security requirements of the TI.

For the pharmacy module, this meant a complete transition to a web architecture, integration with the TI, and compliance with strict security and functional requirements according to the KBV. The new solution needed to be remotely accessible, scalable, secure, easy to maintain, and certifiable.

Challenge

Key challenges at a glance:

  • Secure communication with TI connectors, processing of SMC-B and HBA cards, and connection to the e-prescription system.
  • Migration of the existing Delphi-based desktop application to a modern web application.
  • Compatibility with other modules of the HIS system and ensuring their uninterrupted operation.
  • Fulfillment of KBV certification requirements (functionality, security, documentation).
  • Handling and protection of sensitive medical data.

Solution

Technology Migration:

Transition from a Delphi-based desktop application to a modern web application; Backend: Spring Boot, Frontend: Angular; hosted in an AWS cloud environment.

e-Prescription Module

Management of the complete e-prescription lifecycle: creation, signature, transmission, archiving; fulfillment of tax requirements according to German law.

TI-Integration

Secure site-to-site VPN connections; authentication with SMC-B and HBA cards; geofencing and client environment separation.

Supplier Integration:

Integration of external APIs via the MSV3 protocol.

Medication Search & Access:

Connection to the ABDA database; high-performance full-text search via Apache Lucene.

Security & Authorization

Encryption of sensitive data during transmission and storage; key management via AWS KMS; Role-Based Access Control (RBAC).

KBV Certification

Preparation for full certification; passing all relevant compliance tests.

Result

The result of the collaboration is a modern, secure, and high-performance web application for hospital pharmacies that streamlines daily processes and meets the requirements of the German healthcare system.
